He won photography contest using 11 year old camera

Was it the old camera or his photography skills?

The photographer name is Wim Van Den Heever who is from South Africa, proved to the world how using old camera instead of new one could make no difference.

The camera that he used was Nikon D810 DSLR to capture his winning wildlife photograph. They declared him Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2025 after seeing snap of a rare brown hyena among the ruins of an abandoned mining town in Namibia that was captured from his old camera. That winning image of wild animal was captured at night.

It was not alone a victory for that photographer but also his 11 year old Nikon camera over other new cameras including mirrorless Canon EOS R5.

That photography contest was not ordinary one and interestingly over 60,000 photographs had been submitted for competition by photographers. Underwater photography, insects, animals, mushrooms, birds, urban nature and plants were the categories to choose from.

So should we say that old technology defeated new technology?
