Field testing of the new lunar camera prototype has gone well

ESA and NASA have developed a Handheld Universal Camera (HULC) for the upcoming Artemis lunar mission, expected to be the first portable mirrorless camera used by humans in outer space.

A prototype camera is being developed for the Artemis III mission, aiming to land astronauts on the Moon. The camera, made from professional standard cameras and modern lenses, is designed for extreme lunar conditions, with a "blanket" added for thermal protection and dust protection. Special ergonomic buttons ensure easy operation for astronauts wearing bulky gloves.

ESA scientists tested a prototype on the lunar landscape of Lanzarote, Spain, in the darkness of volcanic caves to prepare it for lunar use.

The HULC is set to undergo further testing, with one version being sent to the International Space Station for further on-orbit experiments.
